PRODUCT DETAILS
Here is a 297 x 420mm (A3) version of our Zone of Proximal Development poster.
The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is a learning theory developed by a Russian Psychologist named Lev Vygotsky, whose short, tragic but incredibly productive life intimidates me immensely.
The ZPD was the learning phase between the learner's actual knowledge (what they can do without help) and their potential knowledge. The teacher (be it an instructor, supervisor or team-mate) would guide the learner through the zone to master the task and do it independently.
The assistance could be things like procedures, demonstration, authentic real-world case studies and asking open-ended questions. These are all elements of instructional scaffolding which aim to motivate the learner and to build off their existing skills and knowledge. This scaffolding is continuously adapted to suit the learner's requirements.
